YArds7-6288 - The View from the Back: Impressions on Chicago’s Union Stock Yard is a collaborative effort fromindependent record label Contraphonic, Inc. and Chicago-based musician Nick Macri.
Macri’s contribution to the Little Hell Series is an amalgamation of delicate songcraft, oral history, and family portrait. Yards splices together interviews with Macri’s Grandfather about his experience as a Union Stock Yard worker (recorded when Macri was still in High School), with his own musical compositions coloring the piece underneath. The resulting work is an aural scrapbook that vividly captures both an intimate family story, and a snapshot of the Back of the Yards neighborhood in the early part of 20th Century Chicago.
Nick Macri is a seasoned contributor to Chicago’s music and arts scene. As a member and performer with such varied outfits as Ken Vandermark's Audio One, Stirrup (with Fred Lonberg-Holm & Charles Rumback), C-Clamp, Euphone, The Horse’s Ha, Heroic Doses, and The Zincs, Macri has recorded for record labels such as Sub Pop, Thrill Jockey, and his own Ohio Gold Records. This is his first release for Chicago label Contraphonic.
